LA BASTIDE

EN/ The house, called « bastide », is situated in the south of France, near Marseille, in the Provence region.
The bastide, as a definition, is a type of house in the provencal countryside, connected to a farm and having agricultural dependences.
As a typical house from the provencal region, the house has few openings and the rooms inside are quite divided.
One of the aim of this project is to adapt this beautiful traditional house to a more contemporary way of living of its new tenants. At the same time, a strong focus is made on keeping the history of the place by working closely with craft mans and material from the region.
On the ground floor, we are planning to extend some of the existing openings , in order to brighten the living areas. We are keeping the placement of the existing kitchen, while making it the center of the place of the house. By extending clearly the existing facade window and opening the wall between the kitchen and the dining room, each room gets to be connected and the dining room gets more light.
The bastide is full of beautiful elements which express the region identity and traditional craftsmanship. A big focus of the project is to explore how to reuse and renovate when needed all these elements, as terra-cotta tiles, wooden doors and handmade plaster staircase.
FR/ La Bastide, batisse datant de trois cents ans, est située au sein du village de Venelles, en Provence. Ayant été construite dans les traditions provençales, la bastide contient peu d’ouvertures et les pièces intérieures sont plutôt divisées.
L’objectif de ce projet est d’adapter cette magnifique bâtisse au mode de vie plus contemporain des nouveaux propriétaires, tout en se concentrant sur la conservation de l’histoire du lieu, par un travail rapproché avec les artisans locaux et par l’utilisation de matériaux de la région.
Au rez-de-chaussée, nous planifions d’étendre certaines des ouvertures existantes, afin de faire rentrer plus de lumière dans les pièces de vie. Nous conservons l’emplacement de la cuisine existante, tout en lui redonnant une place centrale. En agrandissant généreusement l’ouverture en façade, et en ouvrant le mur entre la cuisine et la salle à manger, chaque pièce devient plus lumineuse et connectée aux autres.
La bastide contient de magnifiques carrelages d’époques, que ce soit tomettes en terre cuite ou carreaux de ciment. De plus, des portes d’origines seront rénovées et conservées.
